Stoneymollan

Stoneymollan refers to Stoneymollan Muir, a moor on an unnamed 750ft (277m) hill to the west of the village of Balloch. On the other side of the hill is the village of Cardross, situated on the banks of the River Clyde, which for centuries, was the nearest place to Balloch that had consecrated ground. The deceased would be transported over the hill along a coffin road (there are many of these in Scotland), to be buried in Cardoss. When burial rights were granted to more sites, the coffin road fell out of use for its original purpose, instead becoming a public right of way and a popular walk between the two villages.Following Scotland's Right to Roam being written into law, some Rights of Way are used less often as other walking routes become more popular, but Stoneymollan is as popular as ever. Immediately north of the coffin road is Ben Bouie and its tump summits - Gouk Hill and Killoeter which are well worth a hike.
